Emoticons have nothing to do with HTML. They are much older than HTML,
and at least the most basic one -- the smiley -- has a useful and
important function: to make it unambiguously clear that the writer is
joking, which is not necessarily clear from the text.

Agreed on the messaging slang and the HTML, but keep the emoticons when
they're useful.
