solved! Re:macintosh ppclinux: how to get mouse to work?

For the record:

* the package "mdetect" detects mice <--that was what solved the problem!
* caution: the debian "dselect" utility does not let one search under the 
	"description" field;
* the package could be named "mousetrap" to resolve this difficulty;
* "less /var/lib/dpkg/available" treats text like text, as contrasted 
	with "dselect";
* the default for the "gpm" package was faulty for my G3-266;
* on my OldWorld G3-266 beige powerpc, "/usr/input/mouse0" is the mouse 
	device
* all other gpm defaults seem fine (type=autops2)
