just a few initial ideas...

well, the Linux filesystem doens't need to be defragged because it doesn't
use a flat allocation table.  So nothing to worry about there.

Have you tried running 'top' to see if there is any runaway process that's
eating the CPU time?

Is your CPU fan still going?  Maybe the processor is getting too hot and
dying under the heat?
