Seriously, though, when did Real have a *chance* to compete? They don't have the
opportunity to bundle their software with an OS, as MS does (despite the fact
they've been told *not* to do this for several years now).

IANAL, but the legal precedent is certainly there. The EU, the US DOJ, and
several US states have all declared MS an illegal monopoly. Real is losing
because it was impossible to compete, not because they were ineffective at doing
so.
