Slackware one needs advanced know-how and knowledge to configure which am yet to attain, not for newbies I felt. So am not chained to ubuntu am open to alternatives... just thought knowing the kernel compiling and build process will help later to tweak things so I have a system that is fast. <br>

It's also lightweight, and very stable. And, the community (<a href="http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/" target="_blank">http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/</a>) is friendly and helpful as well.<br>
