Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a Debian derivative, with a community surrounding it that is keen on having more rapid evolution than Debian's processes offer.

Ubuntu's numbering scheme is based on year.month. So, Ubunutu 9.10 was released in 2009.October. Typically there are two Ubuntu releases each year, one in the spring and the other in fall. As well each Ubuntu release has a code name in the form "Adjective Animal", so release 9.10 is also known as "Karmic Koala" and the planned release name for the 10.04 release is "Lucid Lynx".

There are several specialized Linux releases out that are based on Ubuntu, such as:

• edubuntu Ubuntu tailored for use in educational situations.
• kubuntu which replaces the default Ubuntu Gnome desktop with a KDE desktop.
• Mythbuntu Ubuntu for the set-up of MythTV PVR machines.
• xubuntu Ubuntu for low performace machines and/or ones that do not require extensive graphics.
